Summer Scholars Awarded TGYS Funding
Posted on 10/11/2011
It’s hard to imagine any elected official described as “beloved” in today’s political climate. But that’s exactly how Tony Grampsas is remembered. The son of Greek immigrants, Tony Grampsas was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives and served seven terms representing District 25 in Jefferson County.
Rep. Grampsas was an unwavering advocate for education and youth services. Today his legacy lives on in the Tony Grampsas Youth Services Program, a state statutory program that provides funding to local organizations that serve youth and their families.
Earlier this year, organizations were invited to apply for TGYS funding. Summer Scholars was one of 195 applicants (representing 250 agencies). Total funding requested by applicants amounted to $12,737,055, with only $3,156,470 available for grant awards.
In short, it was very competitive – but in the end, Summer Scholars was one of 30 applicants selected to receive TGYS funding! This funding will enable us to provide comprehensive programming at five partner schools during this school year. Previously at each of these schools, we offered only after-school tutoring or recreation, not both, because of funding constraints. Now, with the help of TGYS, students will be able to participate in a comprehensive program that promotes academic achievement, offers hands-on learning through enrichment activities, and provides recreational opportunities.
Summer Scholars is proud to have been selected as a recipient of TGYS funding… and pleased to share this exciting news with our circle of supporters.
